On Wednesday, September 7th, 2016 the Healthy Start Coalition of Hardee, Highlands & Polk Counties, Inc. hosted a Diversity Awareness: Creating A Culture of Respect Training. The facilitator for the training was Naomi Ardjomand-Kermani out of the Gainesville, FL area.
Naomi Ardjomand-Kermani, MPH is an Associate Planner at WellFlorida Council (WFC), the health planning council of North-Central Florida. At WFC, Naomi is currently in their fourth year of managing the High Impact (HIV) Prevention grant, funded by the Florida Department of Health, as both the HIV Prevention Specialist and Linkage-to-Care Coordinator, for newly diagnosed HIV+ individuals. Naomi also acts as a facilitating member of Spectrum, Gainesville’s Transgender Cultural Competency group, and teaches tailored cultural competency to local health care providers, in order to improve health outcomes.
The training was able to focus on various components of Diversity, Culture, Privilege, and Micro Aggressions. In addition, this workshop focused on creating awareness of individuals’ intersectional identities as well as developing skills in order to be more sensitive and understanding when interacting with individuals whose identities are different from their own.
There were nearly 70 people in attendance representing several organizations in our tri-county area. If interested in receiving a copy of the presentation or the facilitator’s contact information for a future presentation please contact Tonya Akwetey at firstname.lastname@example.org. A special thanks to our facilitator, Naomi and all the attendees.
